Today’s bit of silliness is steeped in Americana. Today, my blog received it’s 1776th hit. I hereby declare my independence from breast cancer! Shots have already been fired and the big guns will come out next week. No longer will you colonize my body!
This is totally off topic here but I thought I would see if you have read Barbara Kingsolvers book “Animal, Vegetable, Miracle”? I could see you enjoying this as you rehab over the next month…Another quick read is “Wild” by Cheryl Strayed. About a woman who hikes the PCT alone at the age of 24 post divorce and loss of her mom. Her words may resonate with you on some level…I read it on the flight home.
I did read “Animal, Vegetable, and Mineral”. I finished it a week or so ago. It was a good read. Thanks so much for the recommendation. Right now I’m reading “Emperor of Maladies”, which describes the history of cancer and its treatment. I was a little leery of the topic but John loved it and said I might actually like it right now. My medical oncologist also raved about it. So far it is fascinating and extremely well written. The author uses case example as well as profiling the personalities and work of early pioneers in cancer treatment.
I’ve heard great things about “Emperor…” Two non-fiction books I keep recommending to people are The Big Burn by Tim Cahill (about a colossal forest fire in 1910, Teddy Roosevelt & the formation of the Forest Service…seriously, it’s riveting) and The Wave by Susan Casey (about the science of big waves…again, riveting).
Now if they combined those two books they could have used the water to put out the fires.
