My mom was recently bemoaning the fact that she has never been able to get a picture of a hummingbird. She said that a friend of hers had informed her that he had gotten many photos because they just sit in the bushes next to his window. My mom was dubious about the image of a resting hummingbird. I told her that hummingbirds do sit still on trees and bushes for a little bit but that her friend was probably sitting in the same spot for a long time in order to get his photos.
Lo and behold, the next day I found a resting hummingbird! It even stayed on it’s branch long enough for me to take some photos.
I can’t tell you how many times in the last six months that I have tried to take my phone out of my pocket to get a hummingbird shot only to miss the split second opportunity before the bird flew away.
Victory!
A friend in Canada had two baby hummingbirds in the nest next to her house and got some wonderful pictures.. She posted some on her FB page for all to see.. Amazing
There’s a man in our neighborhood who must spend a lot of time in our local woodland park. He submits amazing hummingbird photos that he’s taken there, to our community blog. He’s gotten photos of the mom on her nest complete with her brilliant colors! And I assure you, he is not using the camera on his smartphone!
There’s a hummingbird aviary at the San Diego zoo, and it’s pretty adorable to see them up close…the teeny nests can make anyone “Squeee!” Hummingbirds rock.
Hummingbirds do rock and they are feisty critters, too. Next time I am in San Diego, I’ll have to check that out. The last time I was there was two Christmases ago. That was the Christmas when John woke up with pneumonia. So our plans were changed.
You should see the new movie Epic, too. Lots of hummingbirds.
What is that movie? Is it animated?
Epic? Yup, it’s animated…and gorgeous. Badass, wee, forest folk ride hummingbirds.
Very cool.
I am so happy for all you lucky people. I do see my share of creatures both big & small so can’t complain too much. Still, I would like to get a photo of a hummingbird. It just isn’t the same if it is not on my camera. I hear from people who have nests right outside their windows. All I can say is blah, blah, blah.
You are funny. One day you will get your photo.
Happy for you Liz…no blah blah here!
Thanks!
I have a few of one sitting in my apple tree and one of it taking off.
That’s wonderful, Anthony!
