I remember being in church as a teen listening to a homily by a visiting mission priest and an interesting man. One of the remarks he made in his sermon was some thing like, “The only one you convert when you are missionary is yourself.” It was a thought-provoking statement with I believe some truth in it.
In the spirit of his words, I have taken the Health Activists Writers’ Challenge today to help activate myself. I have been procrastinating about making an appointment for acupuncture. I left a phone message yesterday and today, I made an initial appointment. It is spring break for many schools so the doctor’s schedule is a bit lighter this week. So my initial appointment is tomorrow.
I will let you know how it goes.
I have faith in your judgement. Look forward to hearing about it.
Good for you! With any healing modality…it might take a few appointments to “click” with the acupuncturist or the treatment itself, etc. Acupuncturists all have different styles & personalities. Obvious, I know, but I’ve known people to eschew some modality because they had one bad experience. I’m know you’re not like that, but some people tend to throw the baby out with the bath water if things don’t go the way they expected.
When I was 3 or 4 months pregnant with Merce, I badly sprained/slightly fractured the arch of my foot & was in a cast for a month (while still massaging full-time). I ended up with some funky water retention/edema at the injury site. The doctor essentially threw up his hands when other things didn’t resolve the issue, and then finally suggested I get acupuncture. I went to an acu friend two times and was underwhelmed by the results. The third time she needled me, I went to work immediately afterward. I was in the middle of massaging a client, and I started extruding moisture. I wasn’t sweating in the classical sense. I had no sensation of heat or exertion, but I was dripping fluid from every pore, literally dripping off the end of my nose, etc. At the end of the massage, I had “sweat” rings under my armpits and down the front & back of my tank top. I walked out of the massage room, and a coworker told me I was radiating heat. I had no sensation of this, but I looked like I’d run a marathon. Coincidentally, the person I’d just massaged was an acupuncturist, so it was perfect timing. I’ve had acupuncture a few times since then, but that’s the most intense experience I’ve ever had. I don’t consider myself particularly sensitive to acupuncture because I know other people who have had more immediate relief from issues than I’ve had.
That is quite the experience!
Yay Elizabeth…I’m heading out for my acupuncture appointment this morning! 🙂
